Social Concerns

One of the 15 organizations First Presbyterian Church actively supports is Habitat for Humanity.

The Social Concerns Committee has a description similar to the Mission Committee but with the focus being closer to home.  In addition this committee has a concern for issues of social justice.   To bring these issues to the attention of the congregation and the community, in 2014 we began sponsoring a series of open forums on subjects ranging from drug courts to immigration, mental health care to low income housing needs.   Under the title “Forums at First” two forums are held each year in the sanctuary, usually led by a panel of community experts on the subject.

Additionally, we cooperate with about 15 local charities as we try to be good neighbors and do hands-on volunteering, raise money and accept donations for local causes, distribute monies from our budget and appeal for funds and articles.   In celebration of the 150th anniversary of our congregation in 2011 we sponsored the building of a six-bedroom house for Habitat for Humanity.
